Geeta, Sahils mother, prepared a delicious meal to send me off while scolding Sahil for taking us out to a restaurant (she says that food from restaurants is garbage and insists that Sahil eat a second “real meal” after returning home from dining out). With Sahil translating, Geeta and I were able to have our first full conversation…. I expressed my gratitude for their hospitality and she smiled, saying that hosting us brought light and joy into their home.

Yesterday during the meal Sahil mentioned that the caste system has little effect on modern Nepali society. However, during the meal, he mentioned a friend that is struggling with loving a girl from a different caste and the disdain he feels from his family. Our conversation drifted, and Sahil outlined how torn he is in his decision making as far as what his next move should be. I encouraged him that the only bad decision is no decision and that every choice, for the most part, isn’t permanent. That said, deep down the caste comment forced me to acknowledge that there could be many deeper cultural lines involved in Sahils decisions that I am blissfully unaware of.

You can tell soon after meeting Sahil that he has a heart of gold.

Mentally I am so ready to be home. Only 25 hours to go. Thank you Nepal!
